The Reservoir of the Spirit
Abiding in the Secret Place as the Foundation of Servant Leadership
In the Kingdom of God, we are often tempted to build from the outside in. We draft the mission statements, we organize the facilities, we train the volunteers, and we hope that if we get the structure right, the spirit will follow. But as servant leaders, we have learned the hard way that a structure without a secret life is just a shell. You can have the most sophisticated training school, the most effective leadership curriculum, or the most efficient organizational model, but if you are not drawing your life from the Reservoir of the Spirit, you are simply performing. You are managing, not shepherding. There is a world of difference between the two.
The secret place is the laboratory of the soul. It is where you go before the world demands anything of you—before the phone starts ringing, before the problems at the facility arise, or before the needs of the hurting knock on your door. Colossians 1:27 reveals the mystery that anchors everything we do: Christ in you, the hope of glory. This is not a distant theological promise; it is your present-tense reality. The "glory" here isn't just about heaven; it is the manifest presence and power of God working through your daily life to bring transformation to the broken. But here is the catch: you cannot transmit what you have not received. If Christ is in you, but you are not actively spending time in His presence, you are like a lamp that is plugged into the wall but has the switch turned off. The power is there, but the light isn't shining.
When you enter the secret place every morning, you are doing more than checking a box on a list of disciplines. You are entering a state of alignment. You are acknowledging that you are insufficient for the work ahead, and you are inviting the Sufficient One to inhabit your thoughts, your schedule, and your decisions. This is the definition of "being" before "doing." When you are anchored in Him, the "doing" becomes an act of worship. It becomes an extension of your communion. You stop trying to change people with your own charisma or your own wisdom, and you start participating in the work that Christ is already doing in their hearts. That is the only way to lead without burning out. When the burden is His, you are just the carrier, not the savior.
The people you lead—those who have been overlooked, those who are fighting for their lives, and those who are desperate for a way out—they don't need another leader who has it all figured out. They need a leader who knows how to access the Throne. They need to see a servant who has been with Jesus. Your morning quiet time is the most important appointment of your day because it determines the quality of every other interaction you will have. It is where you move from the noise of your own ego to the clarity of His voice. If you aren't hearing from Him, you’re just guessing. If you aren't filled by Him, you’re just running on fumes.
We are disciples, and we are in the business of reproduction. You cannot reproduce a tired, burnt-out, frustrated version of yourself. You are tasked with reproducing Christ. That means the "Christ in you" must be the most visible part of your servant leadership. It must be the thing that people notice first when they sit under your teaching or observe your life. Are they seeing a leader who is driven by his own agenda, or are they seeing a man who is saturated in the presence of God? That is the question of the hour. That is the measure of your stewardship.
So, go back to the secret place. Let your morning be the time where you pour out your own weakness and fill up on His glory. Do not let the urgency of the ministry steal the necessity of the mystery. You are a servant first. Serve Him in the secret, and He will reward you in the open. When you walk out of that prayer closet and into the mission field, don't worry about what you have to do. Just be. Be His vessel. Be His witness. Be His servant. If you keep the secret place, the Lord will take care of the public mission. That is the hope of glory, and that is the only way to lead.
