The Divine Pivot
Shifting from Our Game Plan to Heaven's Reality
Every servant leader steps into ministry with a carefully crafted game plan. We map out our visions, design our weekly programs, structure our leadership teams, and point our organizations toward clear targets. In our minds, the strategy is flawless. We know exactly how the plays should run, how the team should execute, and what the wins should look like at the end of the quarter. A detailed game plan tells you what you *want* to happen. It represents our human preparation, our strategic foresight, and our structural organization. Preparation honors God because excellence reflects His character, but preparation can never become a substitute for the present, active guidance of the Holy Spirit.
The moment the whistle blows and the realities of ministry hit the field, we quickly discover that the spiritual terrain is constantly shifting. People face unexpected crises, cultural pressures intensify, internal character flaws emerge, and our beautifully drawn plays begin to fall apart. It is in those precise moments of tension that the game plan begins to mean less, and the scoreboard begins to mean everything. The scoreboard tells you what is actually happening.
When we refuse to look at the scoreboard, we lock ourselves into a rigid script that satisfies our own pride but completely misses what God is doing in our midst. Solomon exposed the frailty of our rigid human strategies when he penned the truth, “The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9). If you are a young leader tracking the wrong metrics, you will completely miss the moment when the Holy Spirit is trying to direct your steps away from your original plan.
The danger of a blind game plan is that it convinces you to keep running a broken play simply because it looked incredible on paper. You will continue to push programs, host events, and demand performance from your people, even when the spiritual scoreboard is screaming that the team is losing its intimacy with Jesus Christ, burning out from religious performance, and running completely on empty. Heaven’s scoreboard is your ultimate diagnostic tool. It strips away the vanity metrics of the world and forces you to confront the actual condition of your heart and the hearts of those you lead. The original human plan might say that success looks like hitting a specific attendance goal or building a bigger platform by the end of the year. But the Kingdom scoreboard cuts through the noise and asks a radically different set of questions: Are the people under your care actually growing into mature disciples who love like Jesus, or are they simply becoming dependent upon your talent and your platform?
To lead effectively in the Kingdom, a servant leader must develop the spiritual humility required to make radical mid-game adjustments. Pride avoids the examination of the scoreboard because it desperately fears exposure, but true humility welcomes the reality check because it desires authentic transformation. King David modeled this level of raw accountability when he cried out, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.” (Psalm 139:23-24). David was willing to stop everything, look past his own royal strategies, and let God audit the scoreboard of his soul. If the spiritual scoreboard reveals that pride is creeping into your leadership, that human busyness has slowly replaced authentic abiding, or that raw human effort has overtaken the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit, you cannot afford to keep running the play. You have to have the courage to call a timeout, drop to your knees, and let the Master Coach draw an entirely new play on the tablet of your heart.
The greatest threat to your ministry will never be an external enemy; it will always be the subtle drift within your own heart. We can easily become so consumed with doing the work of God that we completely neglect our daily walk with God Himself. Jesus never called his leaders to manufacture supernatural results through relentless human striving; He called us to remain rooted directly in Him. “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). Lasting fruit is not produced by the frantic execution of a human game plan; it is produced by the quiet, consistent depth of your abiding. The healthiest servant leaders understand that their public effectiveness will never exceed the private depth of their relationship with Jesus Christ. When we realize that apart from Him we can truly do nothing, we stop clinging to our strategies and start clinging to His presence. We become willing to hold every plan with open hands, giving the Holy Spirit absolute permission to interrupt our schedules, dismantle our expectations, and redirect our steps whenever He chooses.
One day, every earthly scoreboard will completely vanish. The titles we held, the positions we occupied, and the numbers we accumulated will fade into eternity. What will remain is the true record of our hidden faithfulness before the Lord. When Jesus welcomes His servants home, He reveals the final standard of Heaven’s evaluation: “Well done, good and faithful servant…enter into the joy of your master.” (Matthew 25:21). Notice carefully that He does not commend the servant for their worldly success, their massive scale, or their flawless human execution. He commends them for their unwavering faithfulness. Do not marry your game plan, bro. Marry the King, watch His scoreboard, and be ready to shift the very moment He speaks. When you measure what matters most to God, you will discover that the greatest victories are the ones that happen in the secret place where no one else is looking.
