Learning the Way of the Sinner Without Learning the Ways of the Sinner
Understanding Bondage So We Can Lead Others to Freedom
One of the greatest challenges facing servant leaders is learning how to minister effectively to broken people without becoming entangled in the very things that enslave them. Jesus modeled this perfectly. He spent time with tax collectors, prostitutes, addicts, outcasts, and those rejected by society, yet He never participated in their sin. He understood their struggles without adopting their lifestyles. He knew the way of the sinner without learning the ways of the sinner. As servant leaders, we are called to do the same. If we are going to help people find freedom, we must understand how they became trapped in the first place. We must learn how wounds become lies, how lies become strongholds, how strongholds become habits, and how habits become bondage.
Jesus said, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners” (Mark 2:17). A physician studies disease in order to bring healing. Likewise, servant leaders must study the spiritual, emotional, and relational diseases that keep people bound. We cannot simply tell people to stop destructive behavior without understanding what is driving it. Behind every addiction, every destructive relationship, every repeated failure, and every stronghold is often a deeper story that must be understood if lasting transformation is to occur.
Many people enter bondage through pain. Rejection, abuse, abandonment, neglect, betrayal, trauma, and disappointment often create wounds in the heart. Those wounds then give birth to false beliefs. A child who experiences rejection may begin believing, “I am unlovable.” Someone abandoned by a parent may conclude, “I cannot trust anyone.” A person who repeatedly fails may believe, “I will never change.” Satan builds his kingdom upon lies. Jesus said of the devil, “He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him” (John 8:44). When lies are believed long enough, they become strongholds that influence decisions, relationships, emotions, and behaviors.
Servant leaders must learn to look beyond behavior and identify root causes. While many people focus on outward actions, Jesus consistently dealt with the heart. He understood that fruit grows from roots. A person may stop using drugs, but if fear, resentment, pride, selfishness, bitterness, and shame remain untouched, the bondage simply changes form. Lasting freedom comes when Christ transforms the inner person. Romans 12:2 reminds us, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Transformation occurs when God’s truth replaces the lies that have governed a person’s life.
This requires servant leaders to develop spiritual discernment. We must learn to ask not only, “What is this person doing?” but also, “What is this person believing?” and “What pain is this person carrying?” Often what appears to be rebellion is actually unresolved hurt. What appears to be anger may be fear. What appears to be pride may be insecurity. What appears to be addiction may be an attempt to medicate emotional wounds. Servant leaders who understand these realities are better equipped to minister grace and truth simultaneously.
At the same time, we must guard our own hearts. Galatians 6:1 says, “Brothers and sisters, even if a person is caught in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual are to restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you are not tempted as well.” We cannot help others out of a pit if we fall into the pit with them. Compassion must never become compromise. Understanding darkness does not require participation in darkness. Jesus entered the darkest situations carrying light, and servant leaders must do the same.
The goal of servant leadership is not merely behavior modification but complete transformation through Christ. We help people recognize their wounds, confront their lies, confess their sins, renew their minds, and discover their identity in Christ. We walk with them through repentance, healing, discipleship, accountability, and spiritual growth. We teach them not only how to stop destructive behaviors but how to develop Christlike character. The objective is not simply sobriety, freedom from a habit, or escape from a crisis. The objective is spiritual maturity.
Second Corinthians 5:17 declares, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” Servant leaders must never lose sight of this truth. We do not merely see people as addicts, prisoners, prodigals, or failures. We see future disciples, future servant leaders, future ministers, and future kingdom workers. We see what God’s grace can accomplish when a surrendered life is transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Learning the way of the sinner without learning the ways of the sinner is essential for effective ministry. The servant leader studies the path into bondage so he can help others find the path out. He understands the wounds, the lies, the strongholds, and the character defects that hold people captive, yet he remains anchored in Christ. Through wisdom, discernment, compassion, truth, and the power of God’s Spirit, he becomes an instrument of restoration, helping broken people discover the freedom, healing, and purpose found only in Jesus Christ.
