Staying In The Lanes

Escaping Emotional Extremes and Living Anchored at the Cross

Many believers unknowingly live a form of what could be called manic/depressant or bipolar Christianity—not in a clinical sense, but in a spiritual one. Their faith rises and falls with circumstances. Good news produces overwhelming excitement and confidence; bad news produces deep discouragement and spiritual doubt. Their inner life is governed by outcomes rather than by trust in God’s unchanging nature. Scripture warns against this instability, saying, “A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways” (James 1:8).

God never designed the Christian life to be lived in emotional extremes. He designed it as a walk, a path, and a race—movement with direction and boundaries. “He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake” (Psalm 23:3). Paths have edges for a reason. When we remain within them, even shifting lanes through hardship or blessing, we remain safe. The danger is not change; the danger is drifting into the ditches.

Imagine faith as an eight-lane highway. Life brings traffic, weather, construction, and unexpected delays. There are seasons of joy and seasons of sorrow, moments of strength and moments of weakness. But as long as we stay in the lanes, we move forward securely. The problem comes when circumstances pull us into extremes—either the ditch of emotional mania or the ditch of emotional despair.

The right ditch is spiritual excess. Blessings inflate identity. Success is over-interpreted as God’s approval. Faith becomes loud, fast, and reckless. Scripture cautions, “Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12). Joy rooted in circumstances is unstable because circumstances change. God never intended blessings to be proof of worth or favor; they are gifts, not foundations.

The left ditch is despair. Loss, disappointment, suffering, or unanswered prayer convinces the heart that God has withdrawn. Shame, fear, and hopelessness begin to speak louder than truth. David recognized this battle when he wrote, “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God” (Psalm 42:5). Pain does not mean abandonment. In fact, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18).

Between the ditches are subtle medians—control, over-analysis, and constant interpretation of events. Instead of resting in God, the believer tries to manage meaning. Scripture calls us away from this strain: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5).

The true center of the road is the cross. The cross is the great stabilizer of the soul. At the cross, success does not define us and failure does not destroy us. Joy does not exalt us, and suffering does not undo us. “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). When our life is hidden in Christ, circumstances lose their power to control our inner world.

This centered life is sustained by rest—not inactivity, but surrendered trust. Jesus said, “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Rest keeps us in the lanes. It allows us to grieve without despair and rejoice without losing perspective. “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You” (Isaiah 26:3).

Stable faith does not mean emotionless faith. It means anchored faith. We feel deeply, but we are not ruled by feelings. We move forward without panic, endure without collapse, and rejoice without losing humility. Our security comes not from what happens, but from Who holds us. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

The invitation is simple: return to the road. If you’ve drifted into a ditch, God has not left you. If you’re swerving, He is calling you back to center. “The Lord upholds all who fall” (Psalm 145:14). Stay in the lanes. Fix your eyes on Christ. Trust the One who built the road and walks it with you.
