Understanding Spiritual Influence and Authority

Scripture is clear that human beings are not merely physical creatures navigating a material world. We are spiritual beings made in the image of God, created with the capacity for communion, influence, and authority.

“May the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete” (1 Thessalonians 5:23). This means that what affects the soul and body also has spiritual implications. There is no such thing as neutrality. Every person is being shaped by what they submit to, agree with, and repeatedly allow into their inner life.

Spiritual compromise rarely begins with open rebellion. Most people do not wake up one day intending to surrender ground to darkness. Instead, openings usually begin in places of pain. Trauma, abandonment, rejection, shame, fear, and unmet emotional needs create vulnerabilities. In those moments, people look for relief, comfort, or control. When God feels distant or unsafe, substitutes begin to take His place. Scripture warns, “Do not give the devil an opportunity” (Ephesians 4:27). The word opportunity implies access — a door that did not have to be opened.

What gives influence its power is agreement. Darkness does not force its way in; it gains access when lies are believed. These lies may sound subtle: “I’m alone.” “God won’t show up.” “I need this to survive.” “This pain is too much.” Jesus made it clear that freedom is directly tied to truth: “You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8:32). Conversely, deception produces bondage. When lies are accepted as truth, they shape identity, behavior, and perception. Agreement always precedes influence.

Over time, repeated exposure strengthens control. What is entertained becomes familiar. What becomes familiar eventually feels normal. The conscience dulls, discernment weakens, and what once felt wrong no longer alarms the heart. Scripture describes this progression clearly: “Their foolish heart was darkened… they exchanged the truth of God for a lie” (Romans 1:21–25). Addiction, occult involvement, pornography, persistent sin, and unrepentant bitterness all follow this pattern. What begins as coping becomes dependency; what begins as curiosity becomes captivity.

Yet Scripture never leaves us in despair. Darkness has no authority of its own. Its power is entirely dependent on deception and permission. Light always overcomes darkness when it is welcomed. “If we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light… the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Freedom begins when things are brought into the light — not hidden, justified, or minimized. Confession breaks agreement with lies. Repentance closes doors that were once opened. Surrender restores rightful authority.

At the core of every spiritual battle is a throne issue. Something or someone will rule the heart. Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters” (Matthew 6:24). Where Christ reigns fully, no other spirit can remain. Authority is restored not through striving, fear, or self-effort, but through humility and submission to Jesus Christ. When He is seated on the throne of the heart, peace replaces chaos, truth silences lies, and freedom becomes possible.

This is not about fear of darkness, but confidence in Christ. Believers do not overcome by focusing on evil, but by remaining anchored in truth. “Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Doors that were opened can be closed. Ground that was surrendered can be reclaimed. Where Jesus is invited to rule, no counterfeit power can stay.
