Losing Honor Losing God

Honor Begins At Home

Honor is not merely a social courtesy—it is a spiritual principle.
God’s first commandment with a promise was not about worship, prayer, or sacrifice. It was this:
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” — Exodus 20:12
God designed the home to be the first classroom where honor is taught and learned. It is in the rhythms of family—imperfect, messy, and ordinary—that we train the heart to receive authority, respect order, and recognize love.
If we fail there, we fail everywhere else.
A generation that grows up dishonoring earthly parents will struggle to honor their heavenly Father. Because rebellion begins at home—but so does reverence.
Even Jesus, the eternal Son of God, submitted Himself to earthly parents during His youth.
“And He went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them.” — Luke 2:51
If the Son of God practiced obedience in a human home, how can we despise that sacred order?
The breakdown of the family is not just a social crisis—it is a spiritual crisis. The more fatherlessness, brokenness, bitterness, and dishonor spread in the home, the more rebellion will rise against God and authority in every sphere.
“In the last days, there will be terrible times… people will be lovers of themselves… disobedient to parents… having a form of godliness but denying its power.” — 2 Timothy 3:1–5
When honor is abandoned at home, it is eventually abandoned everywhere. Lawlessness multiplies. Faith decays. Love grows cold. And society fractures.
Because earthly honor is not optional—it’s foundational. It is the training ground where we learn trust, humility, submission, and ultimately worship. When we treat lightly what God has designed to be sacred, we reap disorder as a consequence.
This is why restoration must begin again at the family table. Healing homes heals hearts. And honoring parents—even when it’s difficult—honors the God who created them.
“Whoever despises his mother is a fool.” — Proverbs 15:20
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” — Ephesians 6:1
We don’t honor parents because they are perfect. We honor them because God has placed them.
And the honor we give them becomes the honor we give to Him.
Because the most spiritual thing some of us can do is this: go home, give honor, and let healing begin.
