Prayer Part 2: Praying In The Spirit

August 21, 2026

When Our Will Yields to God’s Will in Prayer

There is always a tension in the life of a believer between our will and God’s will, our plans and His plans. We feel it in decisions, relationships, and especially in prayer. Much of our praying is shaped by what we want, what we fear, and what we think should happen. We bring our desires to God, hoping He will align Himself with our understanding of the situation. That is not wrong—but it is not the destination of mature prayer.

Scripture reveals that prayer is not primarily about getting God to agree with us. It is about bringing us into agreement with Him.

The apostle Paul addresses this tension directly in Romans 8:26: “In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” This verse acknowledges something humbling: there are moments when our will, our plans, and even our understanding fall short. We simply do not know how to pray as we should. At that point, prayer must move beyond the mind.

Most believers begin prayer in the head—and that is natural. We pray about what is on our mind, what is troubling us, what we want God to fix. But mature prayer does not stop there. Mature prayer recognizes the limits of human understanding and willingly yields control. When our words run out, when logic no longer produces peace, the Holy Spirit steps in—not as a replacement for us, but as an intercessor working with our spirit.

This is the interface of prayer—the place where God’s Spirit and our spirit meet. When we are born again, the Holy Spirit dwells within us. Prayer in the Spirit happens at this point of union. It is not emotional hype or religious performance. It is spiritual alignment. We are present, aware, and yielded, while the Spirit takes the lead.

This is where the difference between our prayer and God’s purpose becomes clear. Our prayers often focus on outcomes we desire. The Spirit’s intercession focuses on God’s will being formed within us and around us. Praying in the Spirit does not bypass our will—it gently brings it into submission. This is why it can feel uncomfortable. Control is being released.

When we talk about praying in the Holy Spirit—including tongues—we are talking about prayer that bypasses the limitations of the mind and engages the spirit directly. The mind is not shut down; it is simply no longer in charge. This kind of prayer trusts that God knows what we cannot see and prays what we would pray if we had His perspective.

Very few believers move into this place consistently, not because it is unavailable, but because it requires surrender. Silence, stillness, and trust are unfamiliar to a world trained to analyze and control. Many stop praying when words stop flowing. Mature prayer continues even when language fails.

Something powerful happens here. Burdens lift without explanation. Peace comes before clarity. Alignment takes place before answers. The Spirit prays according to God’s will, not our anxiety. Prayer shifts from talking to God to praying with God.

This is where prayer moves from effort to communion. God is no longer distant. He is present—within. We are not performing prayer; we are participating in it. Over time, this kind of prayer reshapes us. Our will softens. Our plans loosen. God’s desires begin to feel familiar.

This level of prayer does not happen overnight. It is grown into. It develops as we learn to yield, to stay present, and to trust the Spirit more than our own understanding. Few live here consistently—but all believers are invited.

The invitation is simple: begin with words if you need to. But when words run out, do not stop. Stay. Yield. Let the Spirit pray through you. This is where prayer becomes less about what we want God to do, and more about who we are becoming in Him.

Mature prayer is not louder. It is not more impressive. It is deeper—because it flows from surrender to God’s will.
