Don’t Just Slay Them — Discover What They’re Feeding On

One of the most sobering realities in spiritual warfare is that not every battle we face is merely psychological or behavioral. Scripture makes it clear that there is a real spiritual realm influencing human struggle. Paul writes, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12). While the works of the flesh are evident in our actions, there is often a demonic influence that attaches itself to those patterns, strengthens them, and seeks to fortify them into strongholds. When we repeatedly return to certain sins or destructive cycles, we are not just battling habit—we may be feeding something spiritual that thrives on agreement and repetition.

Jesus described Satan as a thief who “comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10). The enemy looks for access points—unforgiveness, trauma, bitterness, lust, pride, rejection, shame. These are not merely emotional weaknesses; they are openings. Paul warned believers not to give the devil a foothold (Ephesians 4:27). A foothold implies territory granted through ongoing agreement. When anger is rehearsed instead of surrendered, when bitterness is nurtured instead of released, when secret sin is protected instead of exposed, we are not simply feeding the flesh—we are sustaining spiritual darkness attached to those areas.

James explains the internal progression of temptation, but behind that progression stands an adversary who “prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). Devouring requires feeding. Demonic influence does not thrive in a vacuum; it thrives where there is continued supply. Lies believed become landing strips. Unforgiveness becomes legal ground. Hidden compromise becomes invitation. Over time, these repeated agreements form strongholds—fortified areas of the mind and heart where darkness feels at home.

This is why simply rebuking a demon without addressing what has been feeding it often leads to recurrence. Jesus warned that when an unclean spirit leaves but finds the house swept yet empty, it returns with greater force (Matthew 12:43–45). Deliverance without transformation leaves the supply line intact. If the bitterness remains, if the wound remains untreated, if the secrecy remains protected, the spirit finds familiar ground to reattach. Slaying without studying creates cycles.

The hard truth is that we sometimes nourish what is tormenting us. We ask God for freedom while continuing to agree with the lie that fuels the bondage. We pray against fear while meditating on worst-case scenarios. We rebuke lust while feeding fantasy in private. We renounce rejection while isolating ourselves from healthy community. Agreement sustains attachment. Scripture says that Satan is “the father of lies” (John 8:44). When we repeatedly agree with false narratives about ourselves, about God, or about others, we strengthen the influence connected to those lies.

Strongholds are not merely bad habits; they are spiritual fortresses built on deception. Paul teaches that the weapons of our warfare are mighty in God “for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God.
