Don't Quit

Holding On When the Soul Is Tired

There are seasons in life when God feels close, and there are seasons when He feels silent. Scripture does not deny this reality—it names it. David cried, “How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever?” (Psalm 13:1). Job sat in ashes. Elijah collapsed under a tree. Even Jesus, on the cross, cried out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46). The dark night of the soul is not a sign of failure; it is often a sign of depth.

In these seasons, feelings become unreliable. Passion fades. Joy feels distant. Prayer feels empty. And yet, Scripture never tells us to live by feeling—it calls us to live by faith. “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Faith is not proven in moments of strength, but in moments of endurance.

The greatest temptation in a long season of weariness is not sin—it is quitting. Quitting prayer. Quitting obedience. Quitting hope. Quitting God. But Scripture speaks clearly: “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart” (Galatians 6:9). The promise is not that the season will be easy, but that endurance produces fruit.

There is a simple but powerful truth every weary soul needs to hear: if you don’t quit, God will not quit on you. “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6). Even when you feel stalled, God is still working. Even when you feel numb, the Holy Spirit is active beneath the surface.

Failure does not disqualify you from this process. Scripture never measures faithfulness by perfection. “Though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again” (Proverbs 24:16). Falling is not the issue—staying down is. Grace meets us not at the finish line, but on the ground, helping us get back up again. When you fail, repent, rise, and return. God honors return.

In seasons like these, the call is not to strive harder, but to cling tighter. “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). Hanging on to God may feel weak, but it is the strongest posture a soul can take. Isaiah reminds us, “Those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:31). Waiting is not passive—it is trust held over time.

Endurance is often quiet. It does not look impressive. It rarely feels spiritual. Yet Scripture says, “We also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Romans 5:3–4). What feels like mere survival is often God forming something eternal within you.

If you are in a long season—whether aging, recovery, grief, leadership fatigue, or spiritual dryness—hear this clearly: don’t quit. Keep praying even when words are few. Keep showing up even when strength is gone. Keep trusting even when feelings say otherwise. “Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward. For ye have need of patience” (Hebrews 10:35–36).

The Holy Spirit does His deepest work in those who stay. And light does come—not always suddenly, but faithfully. “The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day” (Proverbs 4:18).

Hang on, brother. Hang on, sister. God is closer than you feel. And if you don’t quit, He will finish what He started.
