The Furnace of Formation: The 40-Year Journey to True Kingdom Destiny
How God Breaks, Aligns, and Establishes the Heart of a Servant Leader
Every leader called by God eventually discovers that the Father is far more concerned with building the person than building the platform. In our human impatience, we often want the assignment, the influence, and the visibility right away. But when you look closely at scripture and the lives of those who have gone before us, a clear pattern emerges: God does not rush the preparation of His servants. There is usually a lengthy, grueling period—often spanning up to twenty years—where God systematically strips away personal ambition, fleshly strength, and our self-made pictures of what success should look like.
This season varies depending on the spiritual environment in which a leader was raised and how deeply they understood the true spirit of God's kingdom from the start. But regardless of background, every leader must go through the furnace. "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor faint when you are reproved by Him; for those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, and He scourges every son whom He receives." (Hebrews 12:5-6). God lovingly permits the wilderness to expose our hidden motives, kill our pride, and teach us absolute reliance on Him.
During these initial two decades of refinement, God takes away our need to build an empire for ourselves. We learn the hard way that human talent, charisma, and strategic hustle cannot produce fruit that lasts for eternity. God allows our personal visions to crumble so that only His purpose remains standing. Moses spent forty years in Egypt learning to be important, followed by another forty years on the backside of the desert learning to be nothing, before he was qualified to stand before Pharaoh. David was anointed as a young boy, yet spent roughly fifteen to twenty years running for his life in caves and wildernesses, learning to wait on the Lord rather than taking the throne by his own hand. "Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who carries out wicked schemes." (Psalm 37:7). This first long stretch is not wasted time; it is the foundation. It is where God deals with anger, pride, and self-reliance in hidden places where no public applause can feed the ego.
If a leader stays faithful through that long season of stripping, God usually initiates a major shift—a ten-year season of consolidation and alignment. Around years twenty to thirty of the journey, God begins bringing together the scattered pieces of a leader's life. The lessons learned through failure, the wisdom gained through suffering, and the skills developed in obscurity begin to converge. God connects the dots, bringing strategic alignments, divine relationships, and refined assignments into focus. The leader stops striving to open doors and instead learns to step quietly through the ones God unlatches. "Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will do it." (Psalm 37:5). The heart of the leader in this middle season is no longer seeking a name for themselves; they simply desire to be faithful in whatever ground they are entrusted with.
This brings a leader into the full maturity of destiny, often after thirty to forty years of faithful endurance. By this point, God has brought the leader to a place of complete, unshakeable brokenness. They have been placed in the exact geographical location, ministry focus, and spiritual posture that God designed for them from the beginning. A mature servant leader at this stage understands the crucial difference between trying to build a kingdom for God and allowing God to work His kingdom through them. They sit back in humble surrender, knowing that their own strength is nothing and that Christ is everything. "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me." (Galatians 2:20).
The ultimate mark of a leader who has walked this forty-year arch is that they operate from their scars, not their status. They no longer care about human validation, titles, or competing with others. Success does not puff them up, and trial does not throw them off balance, because they died to themselves years ago in the wilderness. They have become spiritual fathers and mothers whose primary desire is to pour into the next generation and usher others into freedom. "He must increase, but I must decrease." (John 3:30). When God finds a leader who has surrendered their own blueprint and allowed Him to refine them through the long years of preparation, He finds a vessel He can truly trust—a leader through whom His power, grace, and kingdom can flow unimpeded to a broken world.
